The Future....

Well it is September 1st...a new Subbuteo season is upon us.... and what is the state of the game here in America? Well a quick look around shows that there are less people out there playing the game....Why? Well, seems to me that there are many reasons...none of which the STSL would like to delve into at the moment.

While the recent past has not been the brightest....seems a record low of tournaments, strangely only 48 players registered on the ASA Forum, tournaments taking place that do not seek ASA sanctioning, clubs splitting up and dedicated players exiting. This only names a few of the current struggles.

Well today the ASA has moved into the future. Paul Eyes's run as President of the ASA has come to a close. We thank Paul for all of his dedication and his passion for this little game. His love for flicking is evident and infectious. Hopefully we will see Paul on the other side of the pitch someday again. Matt Fox is honored to have played at the Hallowed Grounds of Paul's garage back in 2009 when Nationals were in Maryland.

Massimo Contruso's reign as President is now 19 hours old and will usher us into the future. It is going to be interesting to see how the ASA will travel into the future. The STSL has committed to getting together more once October role around, as a monthly meeting is in the works. The other thoughts are a little to pre-mature at the moment.

Suncoaster's stay tuned here as we watch it all unfold.

The draw has been made for this years Nationals. There are some intersting looking matchups this year. Unfortunately there are no Suncoasters attending this year. Lets see if Dan Cranston can defend the title he battled for last year.

ASA Nationals Travelers Cup 2010

The festivities start the night before the Nationals...generally with some adult beverages and food of some sort. There are laughs and stories as friends become reacquainted.

During the evening there is usually some flicking...but that night is played the traditional Traveler's Cup. This is a tournament for all the players that are in town the night before from places far and near. Will be interesting to hear about these games this year...

Simon Hutchinson of the Southern California Subbuteo Club has thrown an idea out there. How about we get as many clubs, to play subbuteo at the same time from the east coast to the west coast....

....sounds like a cook idea...

More information will be posted when it is available, but it seems like there is some interest.

Harchester United

Wow..there was a tournament yesterday, the 2009 ASA MLS Cup. We ran across these photos.

Yes, we were quite impressed. Dewey of the WTSL has himself a Harchester United pitch. A couple of us here at the STSL are rabid fans of the famed Dragons of Harchester.

We have the urge to go and play at the Fabled Dragons Lair.

So look out Dewey....

Great job on the tournament also. And congrats to Mr. (have to call him that after Nationals) Cranston on the victory. And to all of the participants.

The Suncoast Phoenix

The legendary phoenix....the mythycal bird of the ancients that, along with its nest, burns to ashes..only to be reborn from the ashes. The new Phoenix is destined to live long and prosper.. cool, maybe so.

But tonight is the first edition of the new Suncoast Table Soccer League. What was going to start out as the first FREE BEER FREINDLY blossomed into something else, as a feast was prepared. With special thanks to Lina Fox and her mother Martica for preparing the Picada.

Mark and his wife Marcia made there way to Foxwood Fold to be introduced to Subbuteo, and to maybe get some interest in the fun little game on the Penisula side of the bay. The feast was the crown jewel, as friends broke bread around the table for laughs...and Shiner Bock and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale...

Eyes turned to the pitch...but first we watched our friends at Worcester River Plate Severn play a match. This was to give Mark and Marcia a quick glance of Subbuteo....then it was game on... or more appropriately, teaching on. This was an evening full of instruction as Mark and Marcia never saw this fun little game before.

Several mini games were played...some ten minutes, and some until a goal was scored....

As you see...no scores were kept as it really didn't matter. At the end of the day, everyone had a great time...Mark began to talk about playing in the future and building his own pitch. He took the bait, and I don't think we will need to set the hook.

The future holds some bright developments as Juanito has his new "Mexico" team waiting for him. Along with two others that have shown great interest. Also, after tonight Mark is going to introduce this game to his son at UCF...

The sky is the limit for the Suncoast Table Soccer League.

Something we can get behind...

Well...us here at the STSL have found a cause to get behind....

We have found that the playing of Subbuteo is fun for all...and so is free beer....so we have committed ourselves in the promotion of Subbuteo, soccer, good times and of course free beer. I feel this will be positive for all of the people that are involved...

From here on out there will be "Free Beer" Friendlies at Foxwood.... there are a couple of tournies in the works...but I think that the STSL will work on the Friendlies first in an effort to promote our fun little game...

This is the U-10 Subbuteo player that lives in the house...The joy is what it is all about...(although she is looking for the completion of the Landycakes Table.)

I went to Nationals this past year in Maryland. And let me tell you something....what a fantastic time. Finally I get to see and meet many of the players that have been read about. It was nice to put a face to a name.

So I thought that I would do some weekly updates on what is happening around the US Clubs...that way we can get to know what every one is doing without going to all of the web sites.. I have something else in mind, but since it is so empty up there it will take me some time to find it.

The first week out from Nationals saw the Washington Tuesday Subbuteo League play some friendlies between Dewey LaRochelle and John Camarano.

To quote Dewey "If either of us could shoot we could be dangerous!" Don't I know it... Three games were played with the scores...Dewey 0-2-0 John 0-0-0.

Then there was also the Alabama State Championship....
